Happy, Healthy Cat Month

September is Happy, Healthy Cat Month! Our feline buddies are wonderful pets. They’re also quite independent. Fluffy is easy to care for, but she really does need a good amount of TLC to thrive. Read on as a Rockville, MD vet offers tips on keeping your furball content and purring.

Basics

Good nutrition is a key part of your cat’s care regimen. Quality is important here, so we recommend getting your furry pal the best food you can afford. Pay close attention to portion sizes. As for treats, a special snack is fine, but don’t let your kitty ‘meowpulate’ you into overfeeding her. Fluffy will also need a clean litterbox and plenty of fresh water.

Veterinary Care

Fluffy would probably rather spend a few hours watching birds and squirrels than coming to visit us, but proper veterinary care is crucial to her health. Follow your vet’s recommended appointment schedule.

Enrichment

Kitties seem to really enjoy doing as little as possible. However, cats do still need enrichment and entertainment. Offer Fluffy lots of cute toys, and play with her regularly. Your curious pet will also enjoy having nooks and crannies to investigate. Set out some pet tends, and offer your furball newspaper tunnels, paper bags, and cardboard boxes. A comfy window seat will also please your feline overlord.

Safety

Our feline pals are very frisky and mischievous, and have a bit of a knack for getting themselves into trouble. Keep your pet safe and sound indoors, where she will be protected from weather, cars, and other hazards. We also recommend doing a bit of petproofing to make your home safe for Fluffy.

Kitty Luxuries

Small touches can really go a long way towards keeping that smug, satisfied look on Fluffy’s adorable face. Offer your kitty some pet furniture. Cat towers are great, but your furry pal will also enjoy scratching posts and, of course, lots of comfy beds and napping spots. Catnip will also brighten up your little buddy’s day.

Cuddles and Love

Cats are actually very emotional, and form very strong bonds with their humans. Fluffy will be happiest if she feels loved and safe. Pay lots of attention to your furry buddy, and offer her lots of cuddles and ear scritches.
