Puppy Training Tips

Has a new puppy just joined your household? Congratulations! Little Fido is sure to bring lots of love and laughter into your life. As you start out on this journey with your new furry friend, you’ll need to take steps to get the little guy started on the right paw in life. Read on for some great dog training tips from a North Bethesda, MD vet.

Basics First

All dogs should know simple commands like Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down. Start teaching little Fido these basics right away. You can also start working on housebreaking and crate training immediately. Once your pup has these down, you can start showing him cute tricks, or teaching him more advanced commands.

Class Curriculum

When training puppies, it’s important to work on one thing at a time. Don’t move on until you’re sure your canine friend has mastered each command.

Pick A Great Campus

When working with little Fido, pick a place that is relatively free of distractions, at least for now. Your furry student may have a hard time concentrating if someone is cooking bacon in his classroom!

Choose Suitable Rewards

Your canine pal probably won’t be overly impressed with a gold sticker or an official report card. Treats, however, will definitely get his attention. Snacks can make a great training aid! Just use small portions, so you don’t accidentally overfeed your adorable pupil.

When it comes to training animals, it’s very important to stay consistent. Use the same phrasing every time. For example, don’t tell your pet to ‘Come’ one day, and then the next day say ‘Fido, come here right now!’ That will just confuse the little guy!

Keep It Positive

Never work with your puppy when you’re in a bad mood. Dogs are very perceptive, and it won’t take little Fido long to pick up your frame of mind. This could cause him to form a negative association with learning. That’s the last thing you want! Also, don’t reprimand your pooch if he misbehaves or doesn’t pick something up quickly enough. Just be patient, and focus on rewarding good behavior. With time, patience, and some yummy snacks, you’ll have your furry buddy trained before you know it!
